Have a big heart and a spare bedroom? Being a volunteer host is as big or small of a commitment as you want it to be.
Volunteer hosts will only lodge patients and caregivers, who we call "guests", when they want and for how long they want. Hosts are required to provide a clean and comfortable place to sleep and access to a bathroom. Any other amenities are provided at the host’s discretion and are not required. Ready to get started? It’s easy as 1, 2, 3.
- Apply: Complete the host application, and list two character references. Let your character references know to keep an eye on their email as they are the keys to unlocking your next steps. Once your character references have responded and your background check has been completed, a Hosts for Humanity team member will evaluate your application and notify you if you were selected within 3 business days.
- List your space: Once you’ve been approved to be a host, you’ll receive an email asking you to create a password, set up your profile, and create a listing for the space you’d like to host on the website. After you’ve hit submit, the property won’t show up as an option for guests until it’s approved by a Hosts for Humanity team member. These checks and balances are steps we take in order to promote a safe environment for both our hosts and guests.
- Host: You’ll receive an email letting you know when your property has been reviewed and approved by a Hosts for Humanity team member. At this point, your property will be “live” on the website and patients and caregivers will be able to see your property when they search. Depending on your location, you may get requests and messages right away, or it may take a few weeks or months to host your first guest.
We encourage each host to review the “Tips for Hosts,” found here, to get comfortable with their responsibilities of being a host.
Depending on how long it takes for your character references to respond, from start to finish you can expect the application process and review to take about 10 business days. For additional information about hosting visit our FAQ page.
